Born in Ipplepen, Devon, Philip Lyons completed a foundation art course in Torquay and earned his degree at the Bristol College of Art and Design. Philip worked for 4 years before deciding to start painting and exhibiting in 1982, then moved to Cornwall and continued painting whilst also working as an art psychotherapist for the NHS. He eventually moved to Falmouth to paint full time and has regularly exhibited work in galleries around the UK.
Philip likes to use subtle colour and strong patterns in his compositions, locking them together to make a firm structure whilst also paying attention to the surface of his paintings. He likes to create areas that have a strong sense of history and narrative behind them. He has recently returned to painting objects like bowls and barns, thinking of them as archetypes out of time; they could be new or they could be old but to Philip they hold a sense of continuation and a solid presence.
Lyons has exhibited in many solo and mixed exhibitions, largely in the SW of the UK but also in other areas. His work is in a number of private collections including The Royal Cornwall Museum and the Palace of Westminster in London.
We are delighted to be showing Philip’s work in the bowie gallery.
