James Stewart

James Stewart was selected for the prestigious BP British Portrait Awards in London in 2004, and was spotted there by the late art critic Brian Sewell, who highly commended his work. His painting of the jockey Sam Whaley Cohen* and his horse Irilut, was also accepted for the 2012 year’s BP Awards, and he has had work accepted there since. Andrew Graham Dixon made favourable reference to his work in recent times. * SAM WHALEY COHEN recently won the Grand National!  James’ self- portrait   BACK TO IT, recently sold at the ROYAL SOCIETY OF PORTRAIT PAINTERS’ Summer Show 2022, at The Mall Galleries London.

Originally from Stockport, James lives in the South West region and paints full time. He studied at Dyfed College of Art, Carmarthen in the late ‘80s and worked initially on album covers, books and advertising. Since 1995 he has pursued a highly successful career in painting and fine art, living entirely from his work which is versatile, witty and often compelling.
