Sophie Capron

Although often classed as an abstract painter, Sophie Capron describes herself as a representational artist: “recording marks that I have seen, and then re-working them into my pieces.” Her work explores the intersection of urban decay and nature’s resilience. Her materials are reclaimed paints of all kinds, often built up in as many as 20 layers, which are then worked and repeatedly sanded down. These are varnished throughout, creating intriguing surfaces that may look crackled but are completely secure with a final matt varnish.

Her work is informed by her early textile-based training, at Winchester, as well as a transformative period of study in Japan. In 2018 she was awarded European funding for a residency at Picture Berlin, an opportunity that led to her participation in an international exhibition in the city.

Sophie’s work is in several galleries, and has been featured in exhibitions in France, Germany, Japan and the US. She is a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists, where she also serves on the committee, and is represented by Art Dog London, Artwave West, and Summer House Gallery as well as ourselves.
